Committee Members Needed

Loxton Mardi Gras Committee Calls for New Members –

Without Them, 2027 May Be the Final Parade

The Loxton Mardi Gras Committee is calling on the community to help secure the future of one of Loxton’s longest‑running and most loved events, following the outcome of the 2026 Annual General Meeting where no new volunteers nominated for committee positions despite extensive advertising.

The committee currently has six active members - below the constitutional minimum of eight required to operate effectively.

Several long‑serving members have also indicated they will be stepping back from active duties, including Peter Magarey, who will continue to offer mentoring support, and Chris Sheahan, who has announced he is retiring after the next parade - but also keen to mentor new members this year.

With the key leadership role of Chairperson remaining vacant, along with two additional general committee positions, the committee has determined that the Mardi Gras may not be able to proceed beyond 2027 unless new members step forward now.

Acting Chairperson Chris Sheahan said the decision reflects responsible governance and a commitment to the long‑term sustainability of the event.

“We are disappointed that no new volunteers came forward at the AGM, but we are determined to act responsibly and work towards a sustainable succession plan if we get community support.”

A Call to the Community

The committee is seeking community‑minded people who can help with leadership, planning, organising, or general support roles. Experience would be useful, but commitment and reliability are the key requirements.

These positions are not a full‑time job. Most members contribute only a small number of hours per week for 2–3 months leading up to the Mardi Gras parade, held on the last Saturday in February each year.

Community members who wish to help shape the future of the Mardi Gras are encouraged to make contact as soon as possible.

Chris added:

“If we don’t get the right new members soon, we will lose the opportunity for mentoring — meaning that 2027 will most likely be our last ever Mardi Gras parade. Act now and give me a call to discuss how you can help keep this iconic community event going. Time is running out — get in touch with me by the 20th of August.”

The 2027 parade theme is “Community Is….’’
